During the Department of Justice and Constitutional Developmentโs Access to Justice Week in Bushbuckridge, Commissioner HRH Princess Eurika Mogane delivered an uncompromising address confronting the deep-seated frustrations of communities let down by the justice system.
Speaking alongside Deputy Minister Andries Nel, she laid bare the painful realities facing ordinary citizens:
๐ The Stifling Culture of Silence: Victims of abuse and violence are too often pressured into silence under the guise of protecting community reputation or avoiding shame.
๐ Justice Abandoned Out of Fear: Systematic delays and intimidation have driven vulnerable victims to withdraw their cases before ever seeing justice served.
๐ Commodifying the Law: She forcefully rejected the dangerous perception that justice can simply be bought by those with money, leaving the defenseless behind.
Commissioner Mogane reminded the gathering that real transformation requires both mutual respect and unwavering legal accountability, sharing her defining principle:
๐ฉท “The rise of a woman does not mean the fall of a man. May we continue to respect each other while the law takes its course.”
While acknowledging the pain of communities, Commissioner Mogane delivered a resounding plea: Do not lose faith in the justice system. The dedicated officials working tirelessly for fairness far outnumber those attempting to derail it. Where the system falls short, oversight institutions like the Commission for Gender Equality (CGE) stand ready to intervene, protect human rights, and ensure accountability.
